World’s largest food awards move judging panel from UK to Ireland to avoid Brexit red tape
Sun, 26 May 2024 05:00:45 GMT

Due to new import controls, a judging session for the Great Taste awards is being held outside the UK for the first time in 30 years

The Great Taste awards are a British success story – the world’s largest food awards, celebrating the best products on the planet. But new post-Brexit import controls have forced the organisers to hold a judging panel outside the UK for the first time in the awards’ 30-year history.

On Sunday, judges from the Guild of Fine Foods panel will travel to County Tipperary in Ireland to spend three days tasting products that have become much harder to bring to the UK.

‘Race suicide’: Sir William Walkley’s unearthed report on apartheid South Africa reveals birthrate fears
Sat, 25 May 2024 20:00:35 GMT

Exclusive: The founder of Australia’s most prominent media awards visited the apartheid state in 1958 and judged it ‘a grand country with a great future’

The Ampol founder, Sir William Walkley, derided apartheid South Africa’s failure to attract white migrants as “race suicide” in 1958 and warned the country faced a potential bloodbath if a communist leader emerged who was “perhaps a half-breed with the white man’s intelligence”.

The comments are contained in a report produced by Walkley – whose Walkley Foundation still runs Australia’s most prestigious media awards – on a four-week tour of South Africa and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) to assess the prospects for Ampol expanding into those countries.

Judge in Mar-a-Lago case asked to curb Trump’s speech after false FBI claim
Sat, 25 May 2024 14:38:48 GMT

Prosecutors make request of Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, saying ex-president’s claims pose threat to law enforcement

Federal prosecutors on Friday asked the judge in Florida overseeing the classified documents case against Donald Trump to bar the former president from public statements that “pose a significant, imminent and foreseeable danger to law enforcement agents” participating in the prosecution.

The request was made to the federal district judge in the case, Aileen Cannon. It follows a distorted claim by Trump earlier this week that the FBI agents who searched his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, in August 2022 were “authorized to shoot me” and were “locked and loaded ready to take me out and put my family in danger”.

‘We didn’t fight for this’: ANC’s grip on power in peril in South Africa election
Sat, 25 May 2024 14:22:44 GMT

Thirty years after the end of apartheid, corruption is rife, crime is high and the economy is a mess. The party of Mandela admits it ‘made mistakes’. But will the people forgive them?

In the heart of Soweto, the birthplace of South African democracy has been burned, looted and stripped for parts.

Almost 70 years ago, in the early days of apartheid, more than 3,000 people gathered in a dusty square to draw up the Freedom Charter, demanding a series of rights and proclaiming that South Africa “belongs to all who live in it, black and white”.

The Observer view: When modified rice could save thousands of lives, it is wrong to oppose it
Sun, 26 May 2024 05:30:45 GMT

The green movement’s attempts to block the cultivation of a grain enhanced with vitamin A is misguided

For a crop that was designed to save the lives of children, Golden Rice has had a disturbing, volatile history. Developed more than 20 years ago using the techniques of genetic manipulation, it provides consumers with the ability to make vitamin A, which is missing from many diets in developing countries. This is a deficit that can have grim consequences. Without vitamin A, infections among the young soar and it is estimated that the lives of more than 100,000 children are lost every year as a result.

The production of a food that could counter this deadly scourge might be expected to be greeted with global relief and gratitude. Sadly, this has not been the case. Although field trials of Golden Rice have shown it to be an effective source of vitamin A that is safe to grow and consume, the crop has yet to be grown commercially – thanks, in the main, to the green movement’s vociferous opposition to its cultivation. Led by Greenpeace, campaigners have attempted to block the growing of any genetically modified crop, regardless of any potential benefit it might possess, and Golden Rice has been a particular target for their attention. The organisation claims there are other more practical solutions to improve vitamin-A deficiency and accuses corporations of overhyping its efficacy to pave the way for approval of more profitable GM crops.

‘A catastrophe’: Greenpeace blocks planting of ‘lifesaving’ Golden Rice
Sat, 25 May 2024 13:00:25 GMT

Thousands of children could die after court backs campaign group over GM crop in Philippines, scientists warn

Scientists have warned that a court decision to block the growing of the genetically modified (GM) crop Golden Rice in the Philippines could have catastrophic consequences. Tens of thousands of children could die in the wake of the ruling, they argue.

The Philippines had become the first country – in 2021 – to approve the commercial cultivation of Golden Rice, which was developed to combat vitamin A deficiency, a major cause of disability and death among children in many parts of the world.

The Taiwanese civilians training for a Chinese invasion – video
Wed, 10 Jan 2024 09:05:28 GMT

Kuo Chiu, known as KC to his friends, teaches urban design at Tunghai University in Taiwan. He’s also one of many of the country's citizens who practises rifle skills in his spare time, in case of a Chinese invasion.

The population of Taiwan has long grown familiar with Beijing’s pledge to one day ‘unify’ what it claims is a breakaway province. But recently, there has been a significant increase in aggressive and intimidatory acts.

Taiwan’s 160,000 active military personnel are vastly outnumbered by China’s 2 million-member armed forces, leading many civilians to turn to voluntary medical and combat training to protect themselves.

The Guardian's video team spent time with KC to see how he is preparing

On the Zero-Day Market
2024-05-24T11:07:53Z

New paper: “Zero Progress on Zero Days: How the Last Ten Years Created the Modern Spyware Market“:

Abstract: Spyware makes surveillance simple. The last ten years have seen a global market emerge for ready-made software that lets governments surveil their citizens and foreign adversaries alike and to do so more easily than when such work required tradecraft. The last ten years have also been marked by stark failures to control spyware and its precursors and components. This Article accounts for and critiques these failures, providing a socio-technical history since 2014, particularly focusing on the conversation about trade in zero-day vulnerabilities and exploits. Second, this Article applies lessons from these failures to guide regulatory efforts going forward. While recognizing that controlling this trade is difficult, I argue countries should focus on building and strengthening multilateral coalitions of the willing, rather than on strong-arming existing multilateral institutions into working on the problem. Individually, countries should focus on export controls and other sanctions that target specific bad actors, rather than focusing on restricting particular technologies. Last, I continue to call for transparency as a key part of oversight of domestic governments’ use of spyware and related components...

Coalition’s brave nuke world a much harder sell after new CSIRO report

The agency’s GenCost analysis says a first nuclear plant for Australia would deliver power ‘no sooner than 2040’ and could cost more than $17bn

The Coalition’s pitch on nuclear energy for Australia has had two recurring themes: the electricity will be cheap and it could be deployed within a decade.

CSIRO’s latest GenCost report – a document that analyses the costs of a range of electricity generation technologies – contradicts both of these points. It makes the Coalition’s job of selling nuclear power plants to Australians ever more challenging.

‘A deranged fringe movement’: what is Maga communism, the online ideology platformed by Tucker Carlson?
Fri, 24 May 2024 18:34:39 GMT

Two young men are promoting a grab-bag ideology celebrating ‘honor’ and condemning ‘global elites’ – and winning powerful friends on the right

In the last few years, a self-styled political movement that sounds like a contradiction in terms has gained ground online: “Maga communism”.

Promoted by its two most prominent spokespeople, Haz Al-Din, 27, and Jackson Hinkle, 24, Maga communism comprises a grab bag of ideas that can seem lacking in coherence – ranging from a belief in the power of Donald Trump’s followers to wrest power from “global elites” to an emphasis on masculine “honor”, admiration for Vladimir Putin and support for Palestinian liberation.

Puglia’s wines pack a punch
Sun, 26 May 2024 05:00:46 GMT

Why the Italian region’s luscious red, white and rosé wines are having a major moment

Paolo Leo Passitivo Primitivo Organic Appassimento, Puglia, 2022 (from £12.80, ND John) Wines from Puglia seem to be a word-of-mouth hit at the moment. So many friends and family have mentioned the region in Southern Italy’s heel as their best recent vinous discovery – and wine merchants say they’re selling better than any other Italian wine. There’s an obvious explanation: Puglian reds offer rather a lot of rich, concentrated fruit for the money, with a natural sweetness (many have a level of sugar that takes them into off-dry territory) offset by a classic Italian tomato-or-plum-like tartness that makes them extremely good with tomato-based sauces and hard cheese – or a combination of the two on a pizza. Many of the most popular Puglians are made with the appassimento technique, with some or all of the wine made with dried grapes, bringing an extra level of figgy, dark chocolatey richness to a wine such as Paolo Leo’s organic number.

Calcarius Nu Litr Rosso, Puglia, NV (from £22, 1 litre, Juiced Wines) The grape variety responsible for most Puglian reds in UK supermarkets is primitivo, which is genetically identical to Californian zinfandel. And, like its American cousin, primitivo is rather more stylistically various than the popular caricature would have you believe. While many come in the kind of sweetly warming, plummy package offered by Asda’s always-reliable Extra Special Primitivo 2022 (£6.75, down from £7.75, Asda), others go for a tangier, more red-fruited, dry and, in terms of alcohol, lighter (13% rather than 14.5% or more) style, such as Cantine de Falco Primitivo Salento 2022 (£12.95, leaandsandeman.co.uk). Other good Puglian red varieties include negroamaro, which, like primitivo, is capable of making wines in a variety of styles, whether it’s dark and spicy (San Marzano Il Pumo Negroamaro, Salento 2022, £10.95, strictlywine.co.uk) or the light, super-lively, vivaciously cherry-herby and thirst-quenching natural mode of 11.5% abv Calcarius Nu.

Anora is a vivacious Cannes victor and a fitting end to a radically romantic festival
Sat, 25 May 2024 21:15:49 GMT

Sean Baker’s story of an erotic dancer who marries a Russian oligarch makes a terrific surprise Palme d’Or winner – though more reward for Mohammad Rasoulof might have felt better

This was a Cannes that turned out to be about love, and the Palme d’Or went to a love story that knocks down the whole idea of a Cinderella romance, while also, in some mysterious and delicate way, passionately believing in it.

Sean Baker’s Anora is superbly acted by its star, Mikey Madison, who plays an erotic dancer and escort in New York called Ani (short for Anora) who finds herself in an exclusive commercial relationship with the wastrel son of a Russian oligarch, called Ivan, played by Mark Eidelstein.

Just Stop Oil ‘alienates people’ from its cause, says Ed Miliband

As demand for sustainable housing grows, architects go back to basics to future-proof homes for a changing climate

“Energy efficient”, “carbon neutral” and “net zero” are buzzwords we hear more and more as we face the impact of climate change. But do we think about them enough in building?

Globally, a move towards sustainable housing is growing. In Europe, efforts to move to greener homes hope to combat rising energy costs and be better for the planet. But 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions still come from the real estate sector.

The Observer view on the Tories: A chance to pass judgment on 14 years of misrule
Sat, 25 May 2024 18:15:31 GMT

The Conservatives are a spent force with an appalling track record. They deserve a resounding general election defeat

As the Commons held its pre-election valedictory debate last Friday, two more senior Conservatives announced that they would be stepping down: the communities secretary, Michael Gove, and the former cabinet minister Dame Andrea Leadsom. They join 15 other current or former Tory cabinet ministers who are resigning seats, bringing the total number of Conservative MPs standing down to 78, higher than in 1997 when the party stood on the brink of a historic defeat.

This is just the latest indicator of the lack of confidence Conservative MPs have in their own party and its leadership; a party that deserves to be dealt a resounding defeat by voters in the polls on 4 July. Its 14 years in government constitute an appalling track record: the Tories have left Britain a poorer country blighted by rising inequality and falling social mobility; a less confident nation with declining influence on the global stage; and a much tougher place in which to lose your job or to fall sick. Their political choices have worsened the impact of the tough global headwinds of a pandemic and rising energy prices.
